Herbal remedies are an excellent route to take when treating common ailments for all people, regardless of age. There are many herbs for kids out there. These plants are here for us to use when treating ourselves for a wide range of purposes. Uses range from a common cold, to relaxation, to treating a fever that’s gone a bit too high. There is herbal medicine out there for our use when treating our families.

Always be cautious when using herbs for kids.

I am not a medical professional and you should always consult your doctor when trying herbal remedies. Use of this site should not be used in place of a healthcare provider. Choose your doctor wisely.

Be mindful of the amount and type of medicine used when treating children with herbal remedies.

It is important to remember that children have much smaller bodies than we adults, and they also tend to be quite a bit more sensitive. Always start with smaller amounts of gentle herbs and give them weaker doses to air on the side of caution. Do your own research outside of this post to make the best choices for yourself and your family when it comes to these natural remedies.

Alcohol-free blends of tinctures should be used for children, such as glycerine versions of these medicines. It should also be noted that we are covering the use of herbs and other herbal products in this article, not essential oils. Some essential oils can be safe for children in small quantities, when diluted, though this is an entirely different topic to be covered in future articles.

Chamomile

The queen of relaxation, chamomile tea is here to save the day for overstimulated children. A nice cup of herbal tea, brewed with purified water at the end of a long day can be very soothing. Chamomile is a safe remedy and will make a great addition to your arsenal of herbs. Every member of the family can enjoy it.

German chamomile is considered to be a more effective type when it comes to any kind of skin rash, including diaper rash. Roman chamomile is considered to deliver more relief to an upset stomach.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm has several uses that can be beneficial to children. It is soothing and can help calm anxiety. This soothing effect can also help with any tummy troubles. It has antiviral properties as well that can help with the growth of viruses or bacteria. For example, this plant is helpful with the treatment of cold sores.

Peppermint

Peppermint is an excellent herb for settling the stomach and aiding with digestion. It can be quite strong, so brew the tea on the weaker side of course and add some maple syrup, honey or milk. Try reaching for some peppermint for those tummy aches next time your little one is struggling.

Elderberry

A tasty herb, elderberry is adored by many young children. Elderberry syrup is an herbal remedy that is sure to be a crowd pleaser while boosting the immunity of your family. This immune-boosting herb is high in vitamin c along with many beneficial antioxidants and vitamins. Whether you want to support the immunity of your family all winter long, or you are looking to help your kids kick that pesky cold, elderberry syrup will be a great thing to add to your medicine cabinet.

Calendula

Calendula officinalis is most widely known for its healing properties to the skin. Products containing calendula are extremely effective when treating diaper rash, poison ivy, and other types of wounds. It can be used to soothe a case of chicken pox. It is also effective in treating fevers, though low grade fevers should typically be left alone to run their course and burn off any pathogens.

Yarrow

This herb is extremely effective for breaking a fever. It is potent. Use with caution. I have found this herb to be an absolute miracle plant and I always keep some in my home in both tincture and dried flower form. This plant has also been known to help coagulate the blood to slow bleeding. Yarrow can be used to stimulate appetite, fight infection, lessen inflammation… the list goes on and on. This plant is a God-send.

Licorice Root

Licorice root is an herb for kids that can help soothe their sore throats. It may also aid in protection against cavities! Using licorice is another great way to aid digestion. It can be quite detoxifying so use much more sparingly than you would with an adult dose. Whole pieces of licorice root is a delicious thing for babies to gnaw on while teething. Be sure to supervise them of course.

Lavender

Lavender is an absolutely divine plant in the world of herbs. It is an excellent herb to soothe the nervous system of everyone in the family. A bath with some lavender bubble bath is a treat for children and adults alike. Though it generally evokes a sense of relaxation, it can actually become a stimulant when too much is used. Use in small amounts and enjoy the magic that this herb has to share.

Fennel

Fennel seed is an excellent remedy to aid the digestive system. This plant is known to aid in constipation and other digestive upsets. It is one of many excellent herbs for kids. Fennel seeds can be used as a welcome addition to soups and teas, as well as many other uses in the kitchen. It should be noted that all parts of this plant are safe to consume along with the seeds. The bulb, fresh leaves and fronds have uses as well. Fennel is a delicious and nutritious vegetable with many health benefits that can be a lovely addition to the diet of your family.
